Lyme disease: The great debate

NEWS CENTER) — Lyme disease is the focus of a huge controversy within the medical world.  At issue is whether the disease can resist treatment to become an on-going, chronic condition.

At the heart of the controversy over Lyme disease is the use of the term “chronic Lyme” to describe the condition that persists beyond a standard course of antibiotic treatment.

On one side of the debate is the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA) which represents infectious disease specialists across the country and sets national treatment guidlines.

On the other side of the debate is the International Lyme and Associated Diseases Society (ILADS), and several other grassroots organizations.  ILADS is a non-profit medical society created to provide information and support for doctors who treat Lyme disease, especially long-term or chronic Lyme.
