Lyme Disease may be more prevalent than ever in WV

March 30, 2012 ·        Lyme Disease is spread through the bite of infected ticks. According to recent reports, this spring there will be a boom of infected ticks in the northeast region of the US.

We should all take a note from WV country music star Brad Paisley.

In 2007, 27,444 cases of Lyme disease were reported to the Center for Disease Control. That’s 3 people every hour. And the CDC believes only 10-12 percent of Lyme disease cases are actually being reported to them. That means more than 200,000 people per year are being infected with this illness, many of which may not know it.

Lyme disease has surpassed AIDS as one of the fastest growing infectious epidemics in our nation, with a cost to society measured at approximately $1 billion annually. And that number is expected to rise.
